The name Narsaraopeta is commonly believed to be derived from the name of a local influential ruler or zamindar, Narsarao, combined with the Telugu word “peta” (పేట), which means town, market center, or street of commerce. Thus, Narsaraopeta roughly translates to “the town of Narsarao.”
This aligns with the naming pattern of many towns in Andhra Pradesh, where peta is used to denote a developing or commercially active settlement.
According to local accounts, the region that is now Narsaraopeta began as a small trading settlement under regional chieftains and landlords. One prominent figure among them was Narsarao, believed to have contributed significantly to developing the settlement into a market hub. Over time, the place came to be referred to as Narsarao-peta in honor of his role.
Another belief connects the name to the Narasimha tradition in the region, as several old temples in and around Narsaraopeta are dedicated to forms of Vishnu. Some historians suggest that “Narasarao” may have originally been linked to a devotional or titular name associated with Narasimha worship, later evolving into a personal or community title.
